More Weird Food
As a continuation of a previous blog about weird food I have eaten, here are some culinary delights from the last week.
In Kuala Lumpur we went to a restaurant in Petaling Street. They had “clamps” on the menu. We assumed they meant “clams”. This is not quite as entertaining as my friend Ron who went to a crab restaurant in Asia somewhere but the menu said “crap”, as in “sweet & sour crap” and “deep fried crap” etc.
They had “chicken frog” too. This turned out to be a huge type of frog, which tastes like chicken. It was quite tasty.
In Malacca, we had Cendol (pronounced CHEN-dohl), which is made from shaved ice, pandan flavoured noodles, coconut milk, condensed milk, and palm sugar. It was a bit like an Ice Kachang which I tasted on a previous trip. Both were excellent.
Today at work we decided to try some JinYang Silk Worm Pupae. They aren’t the worms, but the half-formed silk moths. They have very small legs on them and look a bit like tiny cockroaches.

They are about as tasty as they sound - something like mouldy asparagus. Luckily they were “seasoned with soy sauce and sugar”, otherwise they might have been disgusting. A few of us tried them, but nobody liked them much. One comment was that they smelled like a badly maintained public toilet.
For the ultimate review of eating these, read Steve, Don’t Eat It. He sums it up rather well.
