How to lift an Atlas Stone
Now that you have made your Atlas Stone, you need to know how to lift it. I would show you how to do it myself, but, um, I thought I would get someone else to do it so I could take photos
The pictures below are of my brother Peter lifting a 120kg Atlas Stone.
The technique for lifting an Atlas Stone is :
1. Put it on a soft surface. This is important because you need to roll it onto your fingers and if it is on a hard surface, you will crush your fingers.
2. Place your feet to either side
3. Lean over the stone
4. Get your hands right under the stone. You may need to roll it left and right a bit to get your fingers under it. Make sure your hands are in the middle (front to back) so the stone doesn’t roll out the front or back.
5. Have your legs only slightly bent (you actually lift using your back, not your legs)
6. Tense your abdomen muscles

7. Pull a funny face. I am not sure why this is important, but the professionals all seem to do it, so it is obviously important.
8. Lift the stone up onto your lap
9. Make sure you have a good grip on the stone. Put your arms over the top of the stone slightly.
10. Lift up and lean back
11. To get the last bit of height, you may need to press the stone.
One of the hazards of lifting Atlas Stones (apart from injured backs) is chaffing of the arms and legs :
